Have you been told you snore? Do you wake up feeling tired and foggy? You could have a sleep disorder. Take our one-minute sleep quiz and find out if your need further assessment.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which a patient pauses breathing many times while sleeping. The pauses in breathing can sometimes occur hundreds of times in a single night! Breathing is paused due to blockage in the airway, often collapsed tissues in the throat. When breathing is cut off, the brain is alerted and wakes up the patient so that they can breathe again. This of course means significantly reduced quality of sleep for the sufferer and can lead to more serious health complications.
It is estimated that 22 million Americans struggle with sleep apnea and yet only 20% of them ever realize it, and even fewer seek treatment. Untreated sleep apnea can increase a patient’s risk of drowsy driving, workplace accidents, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart failure.
