The Benefits of Flossing

Posted .

Sometimes flossing seems like a troubling task that you would rather not do, right? Well, unfortunately, you’re not alone. Many people skip their flossing routines because they would much rather brush. This can be extremely damaging for the smile and oral health, especially because flossing is vital. So, please do your best to floss at least once a day.

To help you feel more encouraged to floss, our dentist, Dr. Carrie Sessom, is happy to list the benefits of flossing.

Flossing can keep your teeth strong. Cavities aren’t super fun to have, and they’re even worse when they grow between and affect two teeth. This can happen because plaque lives in the crevices of the smile and promotes tooth decay development. If it’s not removed regularly, it can harden. At this point, hardened plaque can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning. So, if you want to maintain strong and healthy teeth, it’s important to floss.

Flossing can stop your gums from bleeding. The more you floss, the more your gums will get used to the task. Also, the more you floss, the more you’ll remove bacteria from the gumline. One of the major causes of bleeding gums is your body sending blood cells to the gums to fight the infection threatened by that bacteria. So, the more you floss, the less your gums will bleed.

Flossing can help you have a healthier body. Plaque also promotes gum disease by sticking between the teeth and irritating the gums. If the plaque isn’t removed, it can grow and infect the smile. Gum disease has been proven to be linked to major health issues, like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. So, the more you floss and prevent gum disease, the healthier gums and body you can have.
